History of Estonia
The history of Estonia has been very suffering to Estonians, whe have enjoyed the freedom of independence recently only over 15 years. Before that we were under Soviet Union, Nazi Germany. And before 20th century under Sweden, Denmark and others.

But let's start from the beginning. Estonia was settled immediately after the Ice Age, beginning from around 8500 BC. Estonia was ruled by Denmark in the north and by the Livonian order in the South.From 1228-1562 the whole of Estonia was part of the Livonian Confederation. Estonia became part of the Kingdom of Sweden from the 16th for over 100 years. Read more about history from 8500 BC to WWII.
Prior to the Second World War, Estonia was occupied by the Soviet Union as a result of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. During the war Estonia was occupied by Nazi Germany, then reoccupied by the Soviet Union again in 1944. I've also created a page about Estonian history in World War II.
Estonia regained independence in 1991 after the collapse of the USSR. This was the second independence of Estonia in 20th century. Go to find out more independent Estonia history page.
